About Research Higher Degrees

A research higher degree is a program of supervised research and study leading to the preparation of a thesis. The holder of a research higher degree will have submitted a thesis which examiners have declared to have provided a contribution to knowledge and demonstrated the candidate's capacity to carry out independent research.

Research is an integral part of Central Queensland University's purpose. There is a strong commitment to the conduct of cutting-edge research in new areas which challenge the boundaries of the traditional disciplines to provide distinctive research opportunities and solution for staff, students and sponsors.

The Faculty of Arts, Health and Sciences has considerable strength in research and is the leading research Faculty at CQU.
Approximately 100 of the University's research higher degree students are located in the Faculty, as well as three of the University's four designated Research Centres.

Program Aims

The Masters Degree by Research is a program of supervised research and study leading to the submission of a thesis which makes a contribution to knowledge. The program is governed by the Rules for Masters Degrees by Research which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. Consultation with the Associate Dean (Research) of the appropriate faculty will assist applicants to determine eligibility for admission, to identify the proposed areas of research and to ascertain the availability of suitable supervisors.

Program Structure

To complete the program, a candidate will normally study for an expected period of 2 years (full-time) or 4 years (part-time). New candidates may enrol at any time of year and continuing candidates will be re-enrolled at the beginning of each academic year. The courses in which Masters students enrol are ungraded. Candidates who may be required to complete prescribed courses will be enrolled in a separate program (CP20).
