About Music (Specialisation)

Creative Music Technologies (Noosa campus only) 

This unique degree is ideal for those seriously interested in developing industry relevant skills in music technology. Incorporating traditional live sound recording, this practical-based program also involves creating and performing original works. Committed to traditional music making, all of our creative music technologies students take courses in how to read and write music notation, alongside creating music with new audio technologies. The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking each concept with practical experience. Creative music technology students have the opportunity to contribute to performances in a variety of settings including tours, festivals, concerts, and corporate functions. As these are delivered in industry settings, students will gain valuable performance experience relevant to their future career and/or interests.

Jazz & Popular Music (Rockhampton campus only)

The principal focus of the Jazz and Popular Music specialisation is on musical development through performance. In any given year, jazz and popular music students present performances in a variety of settings including tours, festivals, concerts, and corporate functions. As these are delivered in industry settings, students will gain valuable performance experience relevant to their future career and/or interests. The course has been designed to enable specialisations in performance (instrumental or vocal), or composition/arrangement. The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking each concept with practical experience. Students will be involved in a number and variety of ensembles.

Classical Voice (Mackay campus only)

The principal focus of the Classical Voice specilisation is on musical development through performance.  Classical voice students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of classical vocal styles through a range of performance experiences including solo vocal, and small and large vocal ensembles.  The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking each concept with practical experience.  Classical voice students will also gain skills and experience in aspects of technical theatre including stage management, sound and lighting for theatre, design and direcing for theatre.

Classical Piano (Mackay campus only)

The principal focus of the Classical Piano specialisation is on musical development through performance.  Classical piano students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of classical and contemporary piano styles through a range of performance experiences including solo piano and piano accompaniment.  Piano accompaniment will be a strong focus of the ensemble component of this specialisation and students will gain experience in piano accompaniment in a variety of styles and genres.  The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking each concept with practical experience.  Classical piano students will also gain skills and experience in aspects of technical theatre including stage management, sound and lighting for theatre, design and directing for theatre.

Music Studies (Flex only)

The music studies specialisation is designed for those wanting to study a general music curriculum.  Within this academically focussed specialisation students focus on the historical, theoretical and cultural contexts of Western music.  Within this specialisation students can study classical, jazz or contemporary popular music.  In addition to the core courses, the music studies specialisation contains sufficient elective space to allow students the flexibility of tailoring the program to meet their future career path, and allows for the incorporation of practical music activities undertaken externally to the University.

Contemporary (Noosa campus only)

The principal focus of the Contemporary Music specialisation is on developing skills in music performance, music business and music technologies.  Students learn the stagecraft of performance as well as how to analyse, write, arrange, and record music.  The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking concepts with practical experience.  Contemporary students have the opportunity to participate in performances presented in a variety of settings, including at concerts, festivals and university and community functions.

Program Aims

  

The Bachelor of Music (Specialisation) is designed to provide specialist training in jazz and popular music, music technology, classical piano and voice studies, contemporary and general music studies. Students are involved in a comprehensive conservatoire style environment with expectations of high standards of performance, musicianship and scholarship. A rigorous performance schedule in various University, community and professional settings is one of the strengths of this program, as is the development of individual skill in a supportive, collaborative environment. A range of adjunct courses and electives allows students to pursue additional studies in music, or add other allied skills and knowledge in areas of professional and personal interest such as other creative arts and arts administration, events management, education, multimedia design, business and professional communication to their study programs.

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Music (Specialisation) students must complete a total of 24 courses, 144 units of credit.

  • 2 compulsory music courses
  • 1 specialisation (22 courses including electives)

The schedule is designed for full-time students who usually enrol in 4 courses per term (24 units of credit). Part-time students should, therefore, modify the schedule to meet their own needs - observing all pre and co-requisite requirements.
