CG23 - Associate Degree of Mine Technology (Specialisation)

About MineTechnology

Queensland's world class resources industry exports coal and base metals to the global market. The design, planning and operations of mines and mineral and coal processing plants relies on a team of engineers and technologists. The services of this group ensure the community is supplied with the raw materials and energy on which modern society is based.

Queensland is also a centre for mining and mineral processing research. The emerging technologies that are developed in the local mines are the basis for a global mining technical services industry.

Career Opportunities

Graduates would be expected to find employment in mining operations throughout Australia and the world. Mine technology associates specialise in either mining or mineral processing engineering.

They typically support Mining Engineers by:

  • Planning various engineering aspects of extracting minerals;
  • Costing & scheduling of production;
  • Consult with engineers, geologists & production staff regarding evaluation of production equipment;
  • Compliance with Mining Regulations and Environment, Occupational Health & Safety policies;
  • Conduct feasibility studies;
  • Planning for drilling & blasting;
  • Provide technical presentations to senior engineers on aspects of the progress of projects.

    Program Aims

    This program is aimed at educating the technical workforce at the engineering associate level. The objective of the program is to deliver a four year part-time program to meet the needs of mining engineering or mineral processing for the mining industry.

    Dependent on the chosen specialisation, the program has mining engineering, mine management and safety, mineral processing and geological components that will enable graduates to support mining engineers, mineral processing engineers or other technical professionals. Typically, graduates would be involved in the planning and scheduling of mine production or the planning, preparation and processing of mine product.

    Program Structure

    This program is aimed at the education of Mining Technology Associates in 1 of 2 specialisations:

    • Mining
    • Mineral processing

    This program is only available for external part-time study. Students who wish to progress through the program at a faster rate should apply in writing to the Faculty stating the reasons for their application.

    All students enrol in a common first year and then select a specialisation.

    Courses Offered

    Year 1

    The below program structure is valid for students commencing this program in 2009. For continuing students who entered the program prior to 2006, please refer to the Transition documentation.

    All students enrol in a common first year and then select a specialist stream. In the first year of study students complete:

    Please note:  * There is a compulsory 3 day residential school for ENAG11008 Professional and Sustainable Engineering Practice  held early in Term 1. Non attendance may result in forced withdrawal from the course.
